Missionary endeavors of the Baptist Missionary Association of America have involved Christian literature all around the globe - Bible study guides; Sunday School material for adults, youth, and children; tracts and hymnals. The first attempts by BMAA missionaries to print systematic Sunday School literature was in Portugal and Brazil. To this day, material is still being produced in the Portuguese language. In planning for some possible mission projects in the African nation of Angola, Dr. John David Smith interviewed the president of the country's Baptist Union. He shared this fact, "One of the most important tools we have is good, sound, Bible literature that come to us from the BMA of Portugal."

Every three months, more than 20,000 pieces of literature reach Sunday Schools in hundreds of churches and missions through Latin America. Spanish language publications have followed right along with the missionary expansion of the BMAA in that part of the world. The challenge now is to match a greatly expanded mission field with rapidly changing demographics and support new styles of ministry and outreach.

Publishing has played an important role in the development of churches in the Philippines. Now, there are some new things on the horizon. Sunday School material is being printed in Tagalog, one of the major languages of the Philippines. Filipino missionaries from BMA churches are spreading throughout Southeast Asia sharing the Gospel and starting new churches in places such as Cambodia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Laos, and China. What will be the literature needs of those areas? Scripture portions, evangelistic and discipleship studies for small groups, and home churches are just some of the main possibilities. These are exciting days in missions as we envision a multilingual and multinational outreach in Asia through the written world.

BMAA missionaries and church planters are spread throughout a ten nation area of West Africa. Many of these regions were unknown to us just a few years ago. The march of BMAA missionaries through these nations has been swift. Again, one of the common elements is the written word.

One of the principal areas of assistance to the Baptist Unions of Russia and the Ukraine has been literature for a growing Sunday School movement. The effort includes not just printing, but also aiding editorial and publications staffs.
