Middle Asia is the region of Asia that spans from the Caspian Sea eastward to central China and from Pakistan, through Mongolia, northward to Russia. Historically, the region has been closely tied to is nomadic people. It acted as a crossroads for the movement of people and goods between Europe and Western Asia making it a melting pot of ideas and thoughts between the different cultures.

Because of the cultural interaction, Middle Asia is religiously diverse. The Russian Orthodox Church dominates organized religion in Russia. Islam is common in Afghanistan and other western regions of Middle Asia, while Buddhism prevails in Mongolia, Siberia, and Tibet. The diversity within the region provides a mission field full of opportunity that faces challenges from the Buddhist way of thought and opposition from the Russian Orthodox Church.
