During the late 15th century, Portugal and Spain began adventures through and conquering the continent of South America. The Spaniards sought to convert the South American natives to Christianity but were not entirely successful as Catholicism was merged with existing traditions and customs.

South America is viewed as a great opportunity for evangelism because of its broad ethnic mix but a challenging one because of the deeply instilled Catholic culture.
