American Missionaries in West Africa:

Paul Heuermann | John Lindsey

West Africa is the westernmost region of the continent of Africa and includes sixteen countries. Portuguese, French and English traders began settling along the coast in the early 15th century. The African slave trade began soon there after, weakening the regions economy and population.

Islam is the predominant historical religion in the interior regions of West Africa while Christianity is common in coastal regions of Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d'Ivoire. Elements and rituals of indigenous religions are still practiced throughout all of West Africa. While many people and governments have focused attention on the health and improvement of living conditions for the people of Africa, the people of this region are also in need of the word of Jesus Christ.
